Curriculum Vitae

Michel STOCKHEM

Born in Brussels, Michel Stockhem is a graduate of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, where he was Professor of Music History from 1992 to 2012. He has been head of ARTS² (General Management and Music Department Management) since 2012.

An organist and pianist, he has long maintained a regular practice and still performs occasionally. His writings include an extended study on Eugène Ysaÿe (Mardaga), another on the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth (Duculot/Lannoo), contributions to collective works (Flammarion, La Renaissance du Livre, Peter Lang…) and several articles in international journals. He has lectured throughout Europe. From 1996 to 1999, he was director of production at the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège.

Michel Stockhem has been active in record production as a label director, as well as artistic director of some 200 recordings. Initially active with Musique en Wallonie, he went on to become Artistic Director of the Cypres label, and then founded Fuga Libera (2004), the origins of the Outhere group, which has become one of Europe’s leading independent classical recording production groups. He has also produced for RTBF (TV and radio), collaborated with the Queen Elisabeth Competition and scripted two TV/video features, “À la recherche d’Eugène Ysaÿe”/Renaud Gilles and “Le Concours d’une reine”/Benoît Vlietinck.
A lover of cooking, gardening, literature and peated whisky, he is married with two daughters. His dog is a bitch, and even when he buys fish for his pond, they’re fishwives. He doesn’t know why, but he’s used to it. We often find him in front of his computer at impossible hours.
