Curriculum Vitae

Eugène NAM

Born in 2000 in Sydney, Australia, pianist Eugene Nam began his musical journey at the age of seven. He continued his professional training at the Pre-College division of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where early achievements—including first prize at the Sydney Eisteddfod—marked him as a rising talent. At sixteen, he was accepted as a junior student into the class of Gerlinde Otto at the University of Music in Weimar, and soon won first prize at the national competition “Jugend musiziert.”

Since 2021, Eugene has been pursuing his Masters and Konzertexamen degree at the University of Music and Dance Cologne, studying with Prof. Sheila Arnold. His artistry has been recognized at major international competitions, including the Carl Maria von Weber Competition in Dresden (2021), where he was awarded the prize for the best interpretation of a work by Carl Maria von Weber, and the Chopin Competition in Darmstadt (2022), where he reached the semifinals and earned critical acclaim from the press.

He is a recipient of support from “Live Music Now,” the initiative founded by Yehudi Menuhin, and was a prizewinner at the Kurd Aschenbrenner Chopin Days 2022. Recent invitations include solo recitals at the International Chopin Festival Hamburg 2024 and a concert series organized by Blüthner Pianos in 2024.

Eugene has deepened his artistic approach through masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Tobias Koch (fortepiano), Edoardo Torbianelli, Alexander Melnikov, Nikolai Demidenko, and Janusz Olejniczak. His engagement with historical instruments—including the clavichord, harpsichord, and particularly the Pleyel fortepiano—continues to shape his understanding of tone, phrasing, articulation, and pedal technique. These explorations offer him a more intimate and historically informed approach to the music of Frédéric Chopin and the broader 19th-century repertoire.
